As I write this on Monday afternoon... there seems to be a fire sale going on in U.S. assets. In times of global economic uncertainty - which describes the current moment to a T - global investors tend to flock to U.S. assets, including the dollar, Treasury securities, and even risk assets like U.S. stocks. That's because the U.S. is the largest and most diverse economy in the world, its equity and bond markets are the deepest and most liquid, and the U.S. dollar is the world's reserve currency - backed by a prudent, independent central bank. Yet right now the one-day heat map for the S&P 500 is a sea of bright red. I can count on two hands the numbers of stocks that are up for the day. Clearly, investors are unloading their U.S. stocks as fast as possible. |
